Throwback To Babyhood

I just spent so much time trying to find a post that should have been written last spring, only to discover, I never wrote it!  I can’t believe I never shared these photos of my three babies when Little H was just so new and such a wonder to us all.  Looking back on them has been a lovely break from a busy day.  It’s the small, simple blessings that make me grateful for these three, watching them learn to love each other and the joy of watching the big kids grow into new, big sibling shoes.  A year has passed since I took these, but it only serves to remind me of how we have all grown, literally and as a family.

Happy 1st Birthday, Little H!

Today, my baby girl is one.  Not Baby H anymore.  Little H from now on.

We had a beautiful celebration this weekend with family, treating her to more grown-up toys and her first bites of cake.  But the greatest gift of all was her presence in our lives–we could ask for no better gift than that!

We love you, birthday girl!  More on our celebrations to come.  We are busy enjoying and celebrating and being grateful that we were given such a blessing as her.

A Faux Photo Shoot

I booked a photo shoot in February at an indoor location I had never used before, so of course I wanted to scope out the light at that time of day with my camera (and my girls).  As luck would have it, the light was lovely and so were they.

I always lean toward high contrast black and white when capturing a “moment” rather than a portrait.  Black and white says timeless, and these moments between Em and H will always make me smile as it encapsulates their budding friendship and happiness together.  Quintessential sisters.

I also like black and white for a straight on portrait every now and then, too.  Especially backlit.

There’s always room for color, too, especially with Em’s coloring.  I truly do not know where this little beauty came from, but I am so glad not just that she’s mine, but that she is such a willing little model.  Call it photographic selfishness.

For moments like this.

When she takes my breath away!

Quite a photo shoot, for a casual winter’s morning.

Little Sister, Big Sister

While making small talk with another mom today, she asked me what it is like having three kids.  After the usual disclaimer about hectic bedtime routines and how invaluable it is to have a hands-on husband, I had to give credit to my big kids and how helpful they are with the baby, especially Em.  She is truly such an unbelievable helper and loves to be near her baby sister.

I explained to this other mom that this past fall Em was a different kid.  She was shy, always hiding behind my legs and incapable of saying hi to a stranger.  She was hesitant to try new things and uncomfortable being on her own in groups.  In response we pulled her out of preschool, took the opportunity to enroll her in some activities she has grown to love, and most importantly, let her revel in her role of big sister.  Oh, how she has grown.

I explained how Em’s whole life she had been Jax’s little sister, and Jax is a force to be reckoned with.  Suddenly he was in school five days a week and it was as if Em was left to fend for herself, but she didn’t know how.  We took the steps to help build her self-confidence, but it was really Little H who showed Em that she isn’t just Jax’s little sister.  She is someone’s Big Sister, too, and that is a very important job indeed, one that she is extraordinarily equipped for.  One she was born to do.

Learning to be H’s big sister has been the single greatest gift I could have given Em and helped her blossom these past few months into a girl who walks excitedly down the stairs to gymnastics, who dances with abandon at ballet, and who is willing to be dropped off and try something new, like an art class, with instructors and peers she has never met before.  She knows now that she can do anything, because we are there to catch her, but mostly because H is there watching her, learning from her all the time.  Em knows she wants to be a good example, and without question, she is more perfect at being a big sister than I could have ever dreamed.  The perfect big and little sister, all rolled into one.

An Invasion

Ahhh, this is the life.  Reclining in my laundry basket with a good book.

Hey, who’s that? Aw, man…

Come on, Em!  Can’t you play somewhere else?  Here, take this scarf.

Let me out of here!

Don’t patronize me, Em.  Here’s what I think of your “pat pat.”

I don’t want your kisses!  Here, I’ll pretend to scratch my nose, but really I’m…

All right, Em.  Come on in and stay awhile.

I guess you’re not too bad after all.

Let Us Rejoice And Be Glad

Earlier in the month we celebrated a very blessed day for our littlest girl.

Baby H was welcomed into our church and she looked absolutely adorable in her sister’s christening gown while doing it.  It was a very special day.

There were some logistical problems and the baptism was pushed back to the afternoon which created a bit of drama for H.  She was not her usual delightful self due to hunger and overtiredness, but we pushed through and in the end, we had a lot to celebrate and be grateful for, especially the family that was present to share the day with us!

Congratulations to the amazing godparents, Uncle Chris and Auntie Jenny!

Then we went back to Nana and Papa’s for a lovely celebration in honor of such a special day.  Everyone had a wonderful time and it was just the perfect amount of fancy mixed with a small family gathering.  A perfect day.

Grandparents extraordinaire!

And no big day would be complete without a great photo of my three kids, wearing their Sunday best and on their best behavior.

Okay, they were good in church.  What more do I really have a right to ask?

God Bless You, my beautiful baby H!

This is the day the Lord had made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!
