Winter Wipeouts

Like the rest of the country, we’ve had a bit of a dearth of winter wonderland going on in central Vermont.  Before this week we had taken the kids sledding once–seriously–due to lack of the soft powdery stuff, but we did get to take them that one time in January and once since.   Doesn’t jive well with the little ones.  We need a little less talk, a lot more action shots.

This was Em’s very first time sledding!  Linking this one up to Faith at Sweet Violet for my little girl and her Daddy! Doesn’t she look little next to him?

Daddy and Mommy both gave it a go, but I was actually more terrible at maneuvering down our hill and driveway than I could have imagined, and the possibility of steering our almost-two-year-old into a tree was real enough for me to consider getting her a helmet.  Thus, I stayed behind the lens and Daddy led the charge.

Best for all involved.

Jax loved it!  He loved the time with Daddy, going all the way from our sideyard, down our driveway to the street.  It’s an awesome run and we don’t even have to leave our house.  Em, on the other hand, didn’t like to be kept waiting.

Hiiiiiiiiiigh maintenance.

So to keep Lil’ Diva happy, we started a new routine where Daddy stood halfway down the driveway and I aimed the kids at him and they flew solo.  Then he’d hike them up and I’d get the waiting kid ready.

An enjoyable assembly line, but without the presence of an adult (even me),  there were a bit more wipeouts than before.

Which, apparently for Jax, was the best part of the whole day!  If he hears the words snow, snowman, winter, sled, sledding, (you get the idea), all he wants to know is when is the next time he can go sledding and will he wipeout!–which he means as a very good thing.  I have a feeling snowboarding will be in his future, with a few more bumps and bruises to keep even this very humdrum winter exciting!

Our Valentine’s Day

I’ve decided that Valentine’s Day is rivaling Christmas as my new favorite holiday.  I went a little craft crazy this February and I’m not sorry about it.  In fact, I really enjoyed it!  Mostly because of a fabulous idea I stole from Disney Family Fun inspired by someone else’s cool mom, so I decided that I would become that cool mom and go the extra mile for my kids to show them that I love them.

Is there anything better than a day designed to tell people that you love them?  Especially your kids?  Nope, not to me!

So the day started with a curtain of hearts that we hung across the hallway by the kids’ rooms.  I plan to do this every year, and when they’re older JDubbs and I will make one for each of them across their bedroom doors.  For now, they are pretty much of the same mind and mischief, so we did one for them combined.  It was as fabulous to make as it was to watch them open their doors and see for the first time.

I took a package of foam hearts and taped them to a string of ribbon.  On each heart I wrote things that we love about them individually and in general.

Sitting the evening before with JDubbs, brainstorming things to write was something I will look forward to year after year.  Maybe Valentine’s Day is my favorite holiday after all.

Yup, it is.  I did get in engaged on Valentine’s Day, after all.  And this heart curtain thing made me just as happy as them! I plan on keeping them all every year and giving them to the kids when they’re older.  I think it’d be great to get a decade’s worth of love notes from my parents, don’t you?

So after the heart curtain we opened Valentine’s cards and exchanged gifts.  The kids and I made JDubbs something that looked like this–

–and I’d show you the photo except he ate all the gummi worms too quickly for me to catch one.  So imagine for yourself.  I got some beautiful flowers earlier in the week when Miss Em caused a very dramatic stir in a store that just plain exhausted me.

I needed them more then than on Valentine’s Day three days later, and I’m so lucky my husband knows me well enough to realize that.

The kids went downstairs and received their formal Valentine’s from us.  Chocolate, an adorable puppet from The Land of Nod, and a small toy.  Just enough.

Just enough to show that we love them.  My favorite day of the year!

Homework

Yesterday Jax wanted to try to write his name.  He said, “Mom, I have to do my homework.”  Homework?  How did he even learn that word?  So I sat him down at the kitchen table with some paper and a pen, and he did some remarkable scribbling, but his inability to form letters soon led to boredom and he moved on to drawing people.  If your kids have not yet begun the magic of drawing people, I promise it is as delightful for the observer as for the artist.

That’s a picture of his Papa.  He said, “Papa is sure going to love this one!” and put it aside.  Two red eyeballs and a mouth.  Apparently his vision was complete.  Never question the artist.

Then he drew a picture of his Daddy.  This was purely wonderful for me to observe.  First he drew the eyes, then a nose, then a mouth.  Then a giant head and feet.  I had to laugh–nothing in between, just a floating head with two feet.  I said, is there anything missing?  He said, “A belly!”  Not a body, just a belly, a little circle scribble in the middle of the empty space.  He seemed to be at a bit of a creative standstill, so I said, “Picture Daddy in your mind.  What else do you see?”  to which he replied, ” Well, he looks not like a person.  He looks like a handsome.”

There you have it.  One a handsome Daddy.

And since it may not be completely clear, here is a key to deciphering the artist’s intentions:

Speaking of school, before this “homework” session we had been to school and Jax was playing with his teacher.  He said, “I think I am awesome, Miss Kelly.  I’m getting bigger.”  You sure are, buddy.  I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Photography Challenges

This week’s photography challenge theme at Sweet Violet is Inspiration.  What inspires me creatively?

I’m inspired by everyday things.  Things like how my husband has never once asked me to shovel the snow that surrounds us for several months a year.  Like how Jax cannot get out the door fast enough to help him.  Or how Em has started tagging along this year, too, because no matter what Jax does, she has to be right behind him.

My family inspires me everyday and I just love trying to capture our spirit and happiness in my photos.  I’m so grateful for that!

Happiness Is…{a list}

The holidays are so full of moments that are intangible, probably un-photographable, that make up family joy.  They come and go, and by the time you pick up your camera, they’ve passed, but they squeeze your heartstrings just the same and become ingrained on your  holiday memories.  It happened to me so many times this past week, that most of my happiest moments are ones I couldn’t capture on film, but I’ll share them just the same.

Happiness Is…

  1. having my parents come up to share Christmas morning with us.  My parents watched with knowing eyes as JDubbs struggled to assemble Jax’s big gift, and my mom helped to arrange the presents “just so” under the tree so that they were the most impressive when you came down the stairs.  Even though I didn’t get to see my extended family this holiday, having my parents there helped to bridge this change from Christmas at their house to Christmas in ours.
  2. having Jax and Em share a room Christmas Eve.  The sound of their friendship floating through the door was delightful: Em’s ecstatic “HI!” as she tried to get Jax’s attention when he tried to go to sleep, Jax “reading” book after book to her to help her fall asleep, and general squeals and laughter from who knows what.  My kind of heaven.
  3. Speaking of childhood camaraderie, I also love when the two of them get each other going until the giggles can’t stop when we’re driving in the car.  I can’t see exactly what they’re up to, but it usually has something to do with kicking their feet to the music.
  4. Doing dishes while Jax watches Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and hearing him yell out the answer to whatever Mickey is asking him, and then when I peek in, he has his “color-collecting glasses” (aka his hands) around his eyes to search for colors.  I can’t get him to follow directions to save my life, but if Leo from Little Einsteins asks him to pat, by golly, he pats!
  5. Watching cousins who see each other only once a month or so grow into such great buddies.  When my nephew Tommy left to go  back to Massachusetts, Em went over and gave him the coziest little snuggle, and Jax said mournfully, “But I’m going to miss my cousin!”  I love love love their budding friendship.

And I love matching Oregon gear from JDubbs’s aunt in…well, Oregon, obviously.  I think these may be their Halloween costumes next year!

A Sprinkle Of Fun

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and are still enjoying the holiday hangover of good food, great company, and an overabundance of joy.  I obviously did not run home and blog about our Christmas last night, so know that I prepared this post ahead of time, and wanted to spread some Christmas cheer from my family to yours.

Here is a peek into one of our family traditions: decorating Christmas cookies with JDubbs’s side of the family.  He did it when he was a kid, and the tradition was rekindled when we moved up to Vermont.  I’ve posted about it before, and looking back I get goosebumps remembering how little baby Em was last year, but this post is different because this year we had two little cookie monsters, ready to decorate galore.

We all just hang around the table, joking and laughing, trying to keep the kids from eating single every morsel and having a great time.

Em was stealing the show for me this night.  She kept pointing to all the shakers of sprinkles and commanding, “That one!”  Then she would dump as much as we would allow onto a gigantic mountain on her plate.  By the end, we would just ice a cookie and then dip it in her mountain of toppings.  She wasn’t even over-eating, really;  just compiling them.  It was innocent curiosity and very endearing.

We were treated to THE LOOK when we tried to put a stop to her fun, though.  I’m telling you; she’s going to be the world’s most terrible teenager.  You think you can take away my sprinkles?  Are you KIDDING me?

It really wasn’t worth her wrath, so we let her continue.  Carry on, Em!

More sprinkles!  Hooray!

Then the sugar high kicked in for young and old alike, and Jax and Daddy broke out some serious silliness.

Lick icing off each other’s noses in the name of fun?  Oh, the things we do for a laugh!

Hey, in this house, we’ll do anything for smiles like these!

In the end, we finished our delicious cookies, and the end result was almost as great as the process.

A tasty tradition, to be sure, and one we treasure every year!  I hope your celebrations were just as delightful!

Ready To Revel

Next year, we’ll be able to celebrate Christmas in the Hallmark movie, tiny details, scouring Etsy for the perfect decorations kind of way.  This year I’ve squandered a bit of my Christmas cheer by using valuable family-moments time editing photos of other people’s family moments, and I think our halls may not be decked in the manner in which they deserve.  But I have two weeks left until the big day, and I have new intentions and energy and I’m ready to rock this holiday.  Ready to revel.

We have had a few Christmasy moments, but like I said, next year will be a bit more picturesque, meaning maybe next year JDubbs and I will be able to sit back with a cocktail  every now and then to watch our kids attempt to decorate the tree, rather than living in fear that Em is going to break something/step on something/eat something that she shouldn’t.  She is only 19 months, after all, and although she looks up to her brother and keeps up with him pretty well, sometimes I forget that she’s still little.

I remember quickly, however, when I see her reeeeeeaching for her Christmas stocking, hanging by the chimney with care, and I have visions of our pokey metal stocking holder coming down to impale her right on her little Santa’s-cap-wearing head.  So the stockings really never hang by the chimney any more, they just kind of hang out on the floor by the tree.  Just as well, because now no one notices that Jax’s doesn’t match the rest of ours, a problem I was going to rectify this year, but like I’ve said, I’ve been a little lame in the details department.  Next year, oh next year!

Our tree was bought off the lot this year, since we had visitors and weekends planned, and since those darn tree farms are just far enough away to be a pain, we thought it was more important to actually have a tree than to find time to go cut down a tree.  Although now, looking back on our photos of cutting down our tree last year, with Em so little and snug in her reindeer bunting, I could just about cry that she’s gotten so big and now I regret that we missed out on our tradition.  Hilarious, since I was so skeptical about it when we first moved to Vermont, but now I miss that moment as a family when the kids scramble under the tree to watch Daddy saw and then back away ready to shout, “Timber!”  Next year we’ll do it again, but I’m surprised that JDubbs and I let that tradition fall away so quickly.  I’m disappointed in myself and now I am determined to do better this year.  And I must say, for a pricey lot tree, our tree is pretty darn beautiful.  I mean, it’s still Vermont, people.  Even our lot trees are stellar.

Oh, you can’t tell because all you can see are my kids’ grumpy, Grinchy faces?  Sheesh!  I’m glad I wasn’t counting on this for a Christmas card shot!  I think they talked about it that morning over Crispix and Advent calendar chocolate–No matter what Mom does, do NOT, under any circumstances, SMILE!  Maybe they are a little bitter about the lot-bought tree.

Way more exciting than the tree was setting up our Fisher Price manger, which is a huge hit with both kids, and is our big opportunity to try to explain the reason behind Christmas to the them.  Jax sings made up words and then belts out “the little boy JESUS!”  now and then, while Em brings the baby around the house with her.

It gladdens me when Em brings our handful of Christmas board books over to read, and when she gets so excited about the one about Christmas in the manger.  I know they’re little, but I do have a good dose of Catholic guilt about not taking them to church this holiday season.  I also would feel guilty about bringing them for the wrong reasons (i.e. to show them off in their cute fancy clothes, because Lord knows I wouldn’t be able to listen well enough to get in on the message).  So we’ll chalk Christmas in church up to yet another item for next year’s holiday to do list.  For now, I’m just happy they know that there is more to the season than just lights and gifts.  At least, I hope they do!

And lastly, next year I’ll have more to share than just this one blurry photo of the kids trimming the tree–

–because, theoretically, they’ll be one year older and I may be able to be more of an observer rather than standing vigil over our ornaments, waiting for the inevitable broken bulb or hook in the eye.  Next year will be better better in a go-back-and-look-at-the-photos-of-their-childhood kind of way, but this year has been nice in its own Christmas-with-two-young-kids glory.  Next year we’ll have already started listening to Christmas music before we decorate the tree so we’ll actually be able to find it when we want it, rather than searching and losing valuable preschooler attention span.  Next year we’ll trudge through the snow to find the perfect tree, and I’ll be there to capture their awestruck expressions as they watch their Daddy conquer nature.  Next year I’ll be able to put out more of our breakable stuff, may actually be able to hang all of our (matching) stockings over the fire, and will have taught my kids all the correct words to the appropriate religious holiday songs.  But for now, we’ll make do with our memories of the first Christmas where Em could walk and participate and hang ornaments, when Jax really thought if he yelled Meeska, Mooska, Mickey Mouse! at the tree, he could get the lights to turn on (thank you, tree lights remote), and the first year that both of them were so excited for Christmas.  All that other stuff is nice, but this year’s been pretty great, too.  We’re very blessed with what we have, which is most importantly, each other.

And tomorrow, I will go buy a gingerbread house kit.  I told you, my game face is on.  Let the reveling begin!
